Hope is a simple word.
Just four letters and yet it has the power to change everything. Not because it magically removes our struggles or makes life suddenly easier, but because it gives us something to hold onto.
Hope reminds us that tomorrow could look different from today. Sometimes, that's all we need to take one more breath, one more step, one more day. Looking back now, I don't think it's a coincidence that the very first fragrance I ever created was called HOPE. Long before there was a business called Morro & Co, there was simply a woman trying to make sense of her own story.
In 2008, I lost my mum to suicide.
For a long time afterwards, I found myself replaying ordinary moments in my mind. The little details that most people would probably forget. One of those memories was the collection of perfumes that sat beside her bed.
She loved fragrance.
Over the years, I've often found myself wondering something I know I'll never have the answer to. What if, on the day she needed hope the most, there had been something sitting beside those perfumes that reminded her to keep holding on?
Not something that could fix everything or could take away the pain, but something that quietly interrupted the moment. Something that whispered, "Don't give up today."
That question stayed with me for years.
When I eventually began creating candles, I wasn't searching for the perfect fragrance or trying to build a business. I was trying to create something that could become a small reminder for someone else.
A reminder that they mattered.
A reminder to pause.
A reminder that no matter how heavy today felt, tomorrow was still worth believing in.
So I started with HOPE.
Not because I thought it would become our best-selling fragrance and not because it was the most fashionable scent, but because it carried the reason this business exists. Today, there are twelve fragrances in our Core Collection. Each one has its own story, its own affirmation and its own purpose.
But every single one of them exists because HOPE came first.
It shaped the way I think about fragrance, and changed the questions I asked while creating products. Instead of asking, "What will smell beautiful?" I found myself asking, "How will this make someone feel?"
That one question changed everything.
It's why every candle, diffuser and room spray we create is paired with a handwritten affirmation, and why every order that leaves our studio includes small reminders of encouragement. It's why Morro & Co has never simply been about fragrance, but instead it always has been and always will be about people.
Because while fragrance fills a room, words have the ability to fill a heart.
Over the years, I've received messages from customers telling me they bought a candle during a difficult season. Others have gifted one to someone navigating grief, illness, heartbreak or uncertainty. Some simply wanted to remind a friend they were loved.
Every one of those stories reminds me that hope doesn't have to arrive in grand gestures. Sometimes it arrives in the smallest ways like a handwritten note, a warm cup of tea, a phone call or message, or even a candle burning quietly on a bedside table.Â
Hope doesn't always shout, more often, it whispers.
It reminds us that this chapter isn't the whole story and that even when today feels impossibly hard, tomorrow still holds possibility. That's why HOPE will always mean more to me than a fragrance. It became the foundation of Morro & Co because it represents the one thing I never want someone to lose.
We can't always change what people are walking through, but perhaps we can remind them they don't have to walk through it without hope.
And if one candle can become that reminder for someone, then every jar we've ever poured has been worth it.
